Eyelid Surgery
What is eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)?
An upper blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance and often the function of the upper eyelids. Whether you desire to improve your appearance and have more youthful looking eyes, or you are tired of the loose and droopy eyelid skin that creates folds, disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, or actually effects visual function, blepharoplasty is an effective treatment.
Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?
You may be a good candidate if:
- You have excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids.
- You have loose upper eyelid skin that impairs your vision.
- People say you look tired or sad when you are neither.
- You have a puffy appearance to your upper eyelids.
- Your upper eyelids feel heavy often making you feel tired or that you want to close your eyes.
What is entropion surgery?
Entropion is a condition most commonly of the lower eyelid in which the lower eyelid becomes loose and rotates inward toward the eye. This is often painful because the eyelid skin and the eye lashes rub against the surface of the eye causing chronic irritation. The surgery involves tightening the eyelid in a cosmetically pleasing way that causes the eyelid to rotate outward into a more normal functional position.
What is ectropion surgery?
Ectropion is a loosening of the lower eyelid causing the eyelid to fall away from the eye most commonly with time, or rarely as the lid is pulled from the eye as the skin of the lower eyelid tightens. The appearance is often of a very red lower eyelid and eye, and the eye often burns and feels irritated. The surgical treatment involves tightening the lower eyelid to restore more normal eyelid position and function.
What about eyelid surgery for benign and cancerous eyelid lesions?
Tumors of the eyelid can be observed if they are benign, but must be surgically removed if found to be cancerous. The surgery involves excising the area of the lid that is involved, and then reconstructing the defect that is created. In some cases MOHS surgical management is useful to insure that all the cancer is removed with the smallest possible removal of normal eyelid tissue.
